Concert Review – Destroyer at the Biltmore Cabaret, Vancouver, July 18 2009

“Destroyer” man Dan Bejar and his giant fro put on a solid set at the Biltmore last night, but the sweaty soldout crowd wouldn’t shut up, even during his often subdued set.
I found the roar of background chatter disrespectful but the man himself seemed unfazed. At one point he did mutter, “I can’t handle doing another quiet song,” but in typical Bejar bravado, he followed the comment with, “No, I’m going to do another quiet song.”
Despite the noisy background and intense heat, the sometime-New Pornographer and his electric acoustic sounded great. His interaction with the crowd was minimal but enjoyable and people around me were singing along and swaying with their eyes closed, so despite the chatty doodieheads in the back, I’d say the show—the night after the New Pornographers opened for Death Cab for Cutie at the Pacific Coliseum—was a sweaty success.

I can’t understand why some people talk so loudly throughout an entire concert.
When Joshua Radin opened for Missy Higgins at the Commodore he actually became rather bitter about the amount of background noise (even though he was only an opening act). It made me feel really uncomfortable, as a member of the audience who had actually come just to see him. It was like being in class, told off by a teacher even though I personally hadn’t done anything wrong.
